Here we are. It's the 50th anniversary of 1968. It was the year of the assassinations of both Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. It's the year the Vietnam War was reaching it's zenith, with the most American and Vietnamese deaths, the massacre in Mei Lai, Nixon's election because Robert Kennedy's death left the Democratic field in disarray.

It's the year of the cracking of heads in Chicago outside the Democratic National Convention. It was the time of SDS, the Black Panthers, Abbie Hoffman, as well as a groundswell of protests around the world, in Paris, Berlin, Rome, in Czechoslavakia, Mexico, and Poland. And it was the year of the annihilation of the people of Biafra, struggling to seek independence from Nigeria.

We boys in the USA were subject to the draft. Our choices were few - to stay in school and hope the rules wouldn't change, to await the letter that would send us, mostly against our will, to feed the hungry beast, or to escape to Canada. Meanwhile the new president and his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, started negotiations with the North Vietnamese. These negotiations lasted nearly a year, and their purpose was to ... decide on the shape of the negotiating table.

So let's honor1968! Let's honor it with songs of Resistance and Hope. It's a good time to pay tribute to those folk and rock heroes who helped change the course of history, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Odetta and the many others who raised their voices.... And let's be mindful that today, as we face our own internal menace, we are a free people, with the right to raise our voices... and shout from the rooftops... in songs of resistance and hope.

The Annual Meeting functions as a Tribes Hill fundraiser as well. Membership is free. Donations are appreciated. For those who cannot attend but would like to make a donation to Tribes Hill please see the Pay Pal link at the bottom of our homepage. We appreciate your continued support.
